PFAS updates from EPA
There are approximately 15,000 different types of PFAS, many of which have adverse health outcomes, such as fertility issues and higher risk for some cancerns (NIH). Studies of PFAS on lab animals have also been tied to liver damage, birth defects, and delayed development (CDC). Thankfully, there are laws and other requirements to help us identify where harmful chemicals are present and where releases occur. One such requirement is the Toxic Release Inventory, which requires industries to report the amount of a toxic substance that is released into the environment annually. With these recent changes by the EPA, there are now approximately 200 PFAS compounds being managed under the TRI (EPA)!
While this step increases the reporting requirements of facilities and organizations such as the military, it is a strong step forward in addressing the environmental and human health concerns that PFAS hold. Congrats to EPA on their continued progression of their PFAS Strategic Roadmap!
